The coastline is dotted with small towns, many of which serve as seasonal recreational hubs. The climate of the coastal areas is humid and subtropical often comparable to southern Florida in the United States. Superb beaches of world-class quality are to be found along virtually every part of the KwaZulu Natal coastline, with some of the least developed gems found in the far southern and far northern ends of the province's extents. An extraordinary natural phenomenon that is witnessed annually on the KwaZulu-Natal coast during late autumn or early winter is the "sardine run". Also referred to as 'the greatest shoal on earth", the sardine run occurs when millions of sardines migrate from their spawning grounds south of the southern tip of Africa northwards towards KwaZulu-Natal following a path close inshore, often resulting in many fish washing up on beaches along the coast. Many questions surrounding this exceptional event remain unanswered. Durban, just 1 hour away, is a rapidly growing urban area and is by most measures the busiest port in Africa with a good rail network linking into Southern Africa. KwaZulu Natal simply offers unsurpassed 'quality of life' coupled with the excitement of nature on your doorstep - this is where you belong.
In the absence of a safe haven for small craft on the South Eastern coastline of KwaZulu-Natal, the proposed Hibberdene Harbour & Waterfront project will provide a refuge sorely needed on this portion of the Indian Ocean. Together with the adjacent development of the land portions of Spray Rock and Farm Lucas, and other areas of Hibberdene and surrounding areas, will come much needed jobs and working opportunities for a population starved of any real growth prospect. The Harbour will also be able to provide the local sports fishermen and ski-boat clubs a safe launch site for their boats of which there are many. The proposed Harbour with appoximately 350 berths will offer the yachtsman everything he/she requires. Amenities will include a yacht club, upmarket beach resort, hotel and conference facilities, a 60ha game estate, waterfront villas for sale or rent, full repair and maintenance facilities, shopping, swimming, helipad, internet access, taxi services as well as 24 hour security. The value of the increased national and international tourism to the East Coast of Africa, and for the Hibberdene community itself, is inestimable.
